Post-Abortion Art Work Sought for National Exhibit
The Elliot Institute is co-sponsoring a national art exhibit that reflects
the post-abortion experience. The exhibit is being prepared by artist and
publisher Carolyn Blakeslee, founder and former editor of Art Calendar.
Blakeslee has already collected more than a hundred submissions for
the exhibit over the past five years, and is continuing to seek original
paintings, photographs, sculptures, poetry, lyrics and music for the exhibit.
"A substantial number of professional artists have already captured
the post-abortion experience in artistic form," Blakeslee said. "This exhibit
is a unique opportunity to showcase this important body of work and to
encourage other artists to develop original pieces for this exhibit.
"At their best, the arts speak to soul. Through this exhibit, we hope
to show the general public both the depth of grief and loss which follows
abortion and also the great sense of release and joy that can be found
in post-abortion healing and reconciliation."
If resources permit, Blakeslee hopes to take the exhibit on a national
tour, and publish a full-color art book.
"We are excited about this opportunity to educate the public in a new
way--through the arts," said Elliot Institute Director Dr. David Reardon.
"While statistics and rational arguments regarding the physical and psychological
dangers of abortion are important, art reaches people on a different level.
Moreover, because of its unique theme, this exhibit may help us attract
the attention of a different part of the media, namely, reporters who cover
the arts."
Both professional and amateur works will be accepted for consideration.

Grant Funds for Hope and Healing Now Available
We now have funds available for churches and pro-life groups wishing to
promote post-abortion healing and to educate their communities about the
dangers of abortion. The matching funds are available to offset the costs
of distributing Hope and Healing, a 12-page newspaper supplement,
in local and university newspapers.
Hope and Healing is a great tool to get the pro-life, pro-woman
message out at colleges and in the community. It serves both to educate
people on the dangers of abortion and to create a more healing environment
for those who are suffering from a past abortion.
Hope and Healing conveys the truth about abortion and its devastating
consequences in a gentle, non-confrontational way. Since its publication
in August 1998, more than 320,000 copies have been distributed throughout
the nation. Several organizations have undertaken large-scale distribution
projects through their college or city newspapers.
To make it easier for organizations to bring Hope and Healing
to their own communities, the Elliot Institute has established a $40,000
matching grant fund to help subsidize the cost of placing the publication
as an advertising insert in local college or city newspapers. The typical
cost for insertion is in the range of $50 per thousand copies. Each distribution
can be customized to identify local resources and sponsors.
It only takes one individual or group to get the ball rolling. We will
work with any applicant to define a budget and to raise the additional
funds over and above our grant allocation. Sample fund raising letters
and a sample foundation grant request are posted on our web site at www.afterabortion.org/funds/.
Funds are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so interested
groups should call as soon as possible. For more information about applying
for the matching grant program, contact Amy or Nora at the Elliot Institute,
