NBC Expert: Doctors Should Have Admitting Privileges

This past week, three abortion businesses in Louisiana filed suit over a law that would require doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of their facility. Backers of the new law, which is set to go into effect Sept. 1, say that lack of admitting privileges puts women’s health and safety at risk, but the abortion  industry and their allies have continued to oppose such measures.

Perhaps abortion advocates should listen to Dr. Nancy Snyderman, NBC’s chief medical expert. Commenting on the case of Joan Rivers, who was hospitalized in critical condition following minor surgery at an outpatient medical clinic, Snyderman told the Today show:

Sometimes, the medicine used to sedate someone, the age of which someone is receiving the medications, and sometimes just putting the scope down can trigger and event where a person stops breathing. … The really important thing here is that every time you think you are going to have surgery, no matter how minor,  you have to constantly remind yourself that these things are rare – they can happen. And one more thing I should say, make sure your doctor has admitting privileges to the local hospital, because in this case it may well have saved Joan Rivers’ life.
